BURO STEDELIJK PRESENTS
MANIFESTATION #23: TRUTH, BY MILES GREENBERG 

Amsterdam, 10 January 2024 – Buro Stedelijk is pleased to present Manifestation #23: TRUTH, a new video and installation piece by performance artist and sculptor Miles Greenberg. Developed especially for Buro Stedelijk, the Central Space will host an immersive installation with a large pool, welcoming visitors to wade through its shallow waters. The pool is flanked by three video projections of a newly commissioned work derived from documentation of Greenberg’s spectacular durational performance TRUTH, that took place in May 2023 in New York City at Powerhouse Arts. Buro Stedelijk shows TRUTH to European audiences for the first time from February 15 to March 31, 2024.

Presented as part of a new iteration of the original eponymous performance, this new work documents the impressive 7-hour-long battle of eight sword-wielding performers painted in black oil, duelling in a volcanic, vermillion-colored pool. Enclosed in projections and surrounded by a new edit of the original soundtrack by Chino Amobi, the viewer is invited to enter the pool’s reflective landscape. TRUTH implicates the viewer’s body in the fabric of the installation, making the environment react to their presence. In so doing, Greenberg sets out to challenge the boundaries between performance art, sculpture and installation art in a highly immersive way.

Familiar to the city of Amsterdam, in October 2022 Greenberg showed the durational piece Landscape with Figures as part of the program No Intermission developed by Marina Abramović at Royal Theatre Carré Amsterdam. For Landscape with Figures, Greenberg transformed Carré’s ballroom into a desert, covering the Royal Theatre’s floor with sand, mirrors and groups of performers drenched in castor oil. Both Buro Stedelijk and Greenberg are committed to experimentation as a means to imagine other futures for both art and the world at large and are excited to share this joint effort with Dutch audiences and beyond this February. 

Manifestation #23: TRUTH by Miles Greenberg will be on display at Buro Stedelijk’s Central Space from February 15, 2024, to March 31, 2024. This exhibition is open to the public, welcoming art enthusiasts and visitors during the specified dates.

Miles Greenberg (b. 1997, Montreal, Canada) is a New York-based performance artist and sculptor, recognized by Highsnobiety in 2023 as one of the “five NYC artists to know right now.” His large-scale installations, characterized by immersive and site-specific environments exploring the body in space, feature durational performances. At seventeen, Greenberg embarked on independent research in movement and architecture, mentored by Édouard Lock, Robert Wilson, and Marina Abramović. Forbes named him in the 30 Under 30 Art & Style category in 2023. His international exhibitions include venues such as The Louvre (Paris), The New Museum (New York), and Galleria Continua (Les Moulins).

BURO STEDELIJK PRESENTEERT MANIFESTATION #23: TRUTH, DOOR MILES GREENBERG

Amsterdam, 15 februari 2024 – Buro Stedelijk presenteert met trots Manifestation #23: TRUTH, een nieuw video- en installatiewerk van performancekunstenaar en beeldhouwer Miles Greenberg. Speciaal ontwikkeld voor Buro Stedelijk, zal de Central Space een immersieve installatie presenteren met een grote vijver, die bezoekers uitnodigt om door het ondiepe water te waden. De vijver wordt geflankeerd door drie videoprojecties van een nieuw werk dat is afgeleid van de documentatie van Greenbergs spectaculaire durational performance TRUTH, die in mei 2023 plaatsvond in New York City bij Powerhouse Arts. Buro Stedelijk toont TRUTH voor het eerst aan het Europese publiek van 15 februari tot 31 maart 2024.

Dit nieuwe werk, dat wordt gepresenteerd als onderdeel van een nieuwe versie van de oorspronkelijke, gelijknamige performance, documenteert de indrukwekkende, 7 uur durende strijd van acht zwaarddragende, in zwarte olie geschilderde performers die duelleren in een vulkanisch, vermiljoenkleurige vijver. Omsloten door projecties en omgeven door een nieuwe versie van de originele soundtrack van Chino Amobi, wordt de toeschouwer uitgenodigd om het spiegelende landschap van de vijver te betreden. TRUTH betrekt het lichaam van de kijker in het weefsel van de installatie, waardoor de omgeving reageert op hun aanwezigheid. Hiermee wil Greenberg de grenzen tussen performancekunst, sculptuur en installatiekunst op een immersieve manier uitdagen.

Vertrouwd met de stad Amsterdam, presenteerde Greenberg in oktober 2022 de performance Landscape with Figures als onderdeel van het programma No Intermission ontwikkeld door Marina Abramović in Koninklijk Theater Carré Amsterdam. Voor Landscape with Figures transformeerde Greenberg de balzaal van Carré in een woestijn door de vloer van het Koninklijk Theater te bedekken met zand, spiegels en in castorolie gedrenkte groepen performers. Zowel Buro Stedelijk als Greenberg zijn toegewijd aan het experiment als middel om zich een andere toekomst voor te stellen voor zowel de kunst als de wereld in het algemeen en zijn verheugd om deze gezamenlijke inspanning in februari met het Nederlandse publiek en daarbuiten te delen.

Manifestation #23: TRUTH van Miles Greenberg zal te zien zijn in Buro Stedelijk’s Central Space van 15 februari 2024 tot 31 maart 2024. Deze tentoonstelling is open voor publiek en verwelkomt kunstliefhebbers en bezoekers tijdens de aangegeven data.

Miles Greenberg (1997, Montreal, Canada) is een performancekunstenaar en beeldhouwer uit New York, die in 2023 door Highsnobiety werd erkend als een van de “vijf NYC-kunstenaars die je nu moet kennen”. Zijn grootschalige installaties worden gekenmerkt door immersieve en locatiespecifieke werelden waarin het lichaam in de ruimte wordt verkend. Op zijn zeventiende begon Greenberg met onafhankelijk onderzoek naar beweging en architectuur, begeleid door Édouard Lock, Robert Wilson en Marina Abramović. Forbes plaatste hem in de categorie 30 Under 30 Art & Style in 2023. Zijn internationale tentoonstellingen zijn te zien geweest in onder andere het Louvre (Parijs), The New Museum (New York) en Galleria Continua (Les Moulins).

Buro Stedelijk is een veelzijdige projectruimte die community viert en innovatieve, grensverleggende kunst aanmoedigt. Als gedecentraliseerd observatorium heeft het aandacht voor de behoeften van community en ondersteunt artistieke expressie. Door samenwerkingen tussen kunstenaars, community’s en instellingen te stimuleren, wil Buro Stedelijk inspireren tot nieuwe perspectieve en actieve participatie.
